who holds the most power in influencing what is distributed?
Audiences- If they like a particular genre or star then they can influence Hollywood & other film industries to churn out more of each.
film industry- spend often half of their budget on promoting the film and there for can increase the hype around a film/genre/star that was previously unpopular.
five major distributors in the UK-
- United international pictures
- Warner brothers
- Buena Vista
- Twentieth Century Fox
- Sony
9/10 films in the UK are viewed because of these distributors
Classification
British board of film classification,
BBFC is a self regulatory body,
BBFC's guidelines with three main considerations:
- Legal- material which may break the law
- Protective- material which may cause harm
- Social- reviewed with reference to public opinion, especially regarding language.
The Role of a Distributor
Distribution is the highly competitive business of launching and sustaining films in the market place. Films don’t become talking points, or find their place in the world, by accident. The distributor’s challenge is to
bring each one to market by:
- identifying its audience, considering why they’d go and see it
- estimating the revenue potential, across all the formats of its release
- developing plans and partnerships, to build awareness of and interest in the film
- aiming to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits
- persuading exhibitors (cinema operators) to play the film
Like other forms of entertainment, the film industry is product-driven: the films themselves are the main reason for buying tickets. There’s an insatiable, deep-rooted desire for great stories on screen as well as in print. But today more than ever, consumers call the shots, deciding for themselves what information or ‘content’ to receive or reject, access or delete.
The Cycle of a films production and Distribution
Producer/company acquires rights to film a story or treatment
Screenplay is developed by one or more writers
Production finance and cast and crew are confirmed
Principal photography takes place, in studios and/or on agreed locations,
followed by some months of post-production, editing and scoring
Distributor develops release strategy, considers release date,
and takes delivery of a master print of the finished film
Distributor presents the film to exhibitors and negotiates
bilateral agreements to have it shown in cinemas
Distributor’s marketing campaign aims to create a ‘want to see’
buzz among the target audience and launches the film
Film prints including the British Board of Film Classification
certificate are delivered to cinemas a few days before opening
Film’s run extends any number of weeks subject to demand,
which may be augmented by additional marketing
Following its run in cinemas, the film is released in other formats
(home entertainment, television) and quickly becomes a catalogue title
